Revisit Performance tests

When flume was initially open sourced, it came with a suite of performance testing microbenchmarks. Many of these depended on external data that was not included in the release. This patch would update the benchmarks to use synthetic data and ideally would lead to performance testing and monitoring for performance regressions.
