Rename of markdown files to .html fails for user guide in `make docs`

            Description

            The rename command used when converting the User Guide markdown files to HTML does not have any effect on my system (openSUSE 12.3) and does not conform to any documentation I've seen. The generated HTML files retain their *.md filenames.
